Canada was recently given the great honor of being named the top travel destination for 2017 by Lonely Planet, the world’s biggest travel guide book publisher. After Canada, Columbia ranked second, and Finland third, on Lonely Planet’s “Best in Travel” list. Being nominated the best country to visit next year came at a good time, as Canada will be celebrating its 150^th anniversary in 2017.
 
Lonely Planet published a 58-page chapter on Canada that can be downloaded for free on its website. The travel-guide publisher cited several points that make Canada so appealing, including the country’s reputation for being inclusive and polite as well as and its “local food smorgasboard” and underrated wines. Canada isn’t just the second biggest country in the world with grand mountains and scenic views. The country’s cultural diversity shouldn’t go unnoticed, with the people, food and arts being integral parts of Canada’s cultural landscape.
 
Lonely Planet writes a list of Canada’s Top 25, with British Columbia’s Haida Gwaii in first place. Haida Gwaii is an archipelago with ancient rainforest and landscapes. It is the ancestral home of the Haida people. In second place are BC’s Rockies, with its four national parks. In third, the Nahanni Territorial Park Reserve in the Northwest Territories.  
 
The rest of Canada is also included in this list from Ontario’s Niagara Falls, to Quebec’s Old Quebec City, to PEI’s Green Gables. At number 21, Lonely Planet even stresses that attending a hockey game is mandatory if you’re visiting between the months of October and April.
 
Also included in Lonely Planet’s write-up is how to plan your trip with children, a month-by-month guide to events, as well as sample itineraries useful for those planning a trip. “The Central Corridor” trip takes two weeks and includes Canada’s largest cities in its route from Toronto to Quebec City. Want a longer cross-Canada trip? Plan for four weeks and take the Trans Canada Highway from St. John’s, Newfoundland on the east coast, all the way to Victoria, BC on the west coast.
 
Canada is a gem of a country to visit with something for everyone. Everything in Canada, from its endless variety of landscapes, to the glaciers, and majestic mountains, make the country deserving of the top spot on Lonely Planet’s best places to visit list.
 
Canada’s Minister of Small Business and Tourism, Bardish Chagger, stated "We are honored to have been selected as Lonely Planet's Destination of the Year for 2017." Given that the honor comes when Canada will be celebrating its sesquicentennial, the Minister added "We couldn't think of a better time to invite the world to discover Canada."
