Antigua and Barbuda celebrates Emancipation Day every August 1st and this year marked the 182nd year of the country’s full emancipation from slavery. In his Emancipation Speech, Prime Minister Gaston Browne told citizens that the country must “think big” and explore new approaches that would improve life for all. Even though the twin-island state has limited resources and a small population, it did not stop it from experiencing economic growth year after year. The country must aim to improve productivity in order to keep the economy moving in a positive direction.

The Emancipation of the country has allowed the economy to transition from producing sugar and cotton to a service-based economy that now relies primarily on tourism, as well as other services including agriculture and construction. Browne said that his “vision to make (the) country into an economic powerhouse, is already taking shape in the number of major investments that are now beginning to unfold.”
